They don't have a green, they don't have a green light new project or green light new
project and they can hardly throw 400 more developers on marathon.
You also see some leadership OGs leave and I believe July, which is when Sony's deal
cash vests for many of them.
So pretty much what was said and what Jason Schreyer said when he said that significant
layoffs are coming is that it seems like pretty much the entire Destiny team is going to get
laid off, which is a lot of developers.
Yeah, that's the bulletin new bungee is reportedly saying to lay off at least 50% of
its workforce this summer around 400 employees following the end of
Descent 2's live service development thoughts.
The marathon really do this, you know, it's a combination of Sony, it's a combination
of Bungie not reading internal goals that they said alongside Bungie years ago and a
a big contributing factor to not meeting those internal goals were delays.
You know, when, when, or when Bungie was reportedly working multiple incubation projects,
the marathon was supposed to beta back in 2024 and potentially even release in 2024.
It was definitely not supposed to release any later in the 2025 and it, it, it failed to
2026 and it's reception is not good.
I didn't look, this is really not, not even me trying to shit on marathon.
Um, it is not a success.
And for my marathon, people that are like, you know, don't worry, marathon is still good.
I don't think you guys are going to be too far behind us is what I'm saying because I just don't see
anywhere in this universe where marathon can support 400 developers.
So the math just doesn't make sense.
There's a lot of games brother sitting at 80 80% I don't know what a steam reviews are
but I know that Marathon's reviews are good guess what there's a lot of games out there
guys that had that have good reviews. Hell final shape was the best rated expansion Bungie
and destiny ever put out. It's like a 90-something on Metacritic. You know what followed that?
Layoffs. You could be critically acclaimed, you could have fantastic reviews across the
board, but if you're a live game or any game in general and you don't have enough people
playing your game, you're not gonna be able to make your investment back. And that's
That's what Sony's happen, happen right now.
And the thing is, is like, I don't even know if Marathon is being kept alive because that's
necessarily Sony putting fate in Marathon.
Or if it's just because contractually they are tied to Marathon right now, or at least
the, I don't know, I don't know.
I'm curious to know what the best thing is for the marathon
side of the, because they've got people that have been OGs that
have been with Bungie for years on the marathon side.
And so I'm curious to know if they just
have an extra year on their contract, if you will,
before you start seeing people dip on the marathon side.

Destiny is a different situation because as you've seen from the numbers, that's why it's
such an anomaly to me to see Destiny getting canned.
And I know everyone's going to say, oh, but Destiny's so expensive to make.
Well, Marathon's about to have 400 fucking developers just working on it.
That sounds pretty fucking expensive.
High five rush was incredibly successful so the entire studio got shut down.
I wonder if it's an ego thing with Marathon.
Yeah, because Sony, you gotta understand guys, if Sony came out and they shut down
They, they, they decide we're going to lay off the marathon side instead of the destiny

But if Sony went in there and did that, do you know what that says?

And I will say this, if a D3 ever gets greenlit, I think a lot could be said about this update
and how they approach the Destiny 3 in its monetization, its paywalls, its FOMO, or in
this case, lack of FOMO.
I think the business model works for Destiny 2,
the seasonal business model.
But for Destiny 3, I think there actually could be a different business model.
If you're looking for examples, there's a game called RuneScape.
And to me, it's one of the best examples on how to run your live game and run one's community.
As far as the devs that are getting laid off, man, you know, I just don't see how talented
people like this that have been, I mean, think of these are the people, whether it was Michael
South Tory, who cooked up some of the best music that has ever graced our ears. It's Joe Blackburn,
who was Game Director for Destiny 2 and did such a phenomenal job, even with light bulb
being what it is, he jumped on the final shape and made shit happen.
For what it's worth, the team here that delivered Monument of Triumph, Robbie Stevens and Tyson
and everyone that's been Womack and the people that you've seen multiple times who
are incredibly fucking talented.
I think they're going to go on to do some great fucking things.
Dude, I think Sony is fucking up so goddamn bad.
I think they're going to go on to make some great shit.
And I hope those guys come together and make something potentially like a destiny
in the way they want to make it and stay independent.
And that is something dear that I would, I would keep my eyes on
from its inception to its delivery, and I hope they do.

monument to trial.

Bungee's also has already had a rough few weeks
Destiny 2 recently received its final live service update called Monument of Triumph,
bringing years of active development to a close.
That said, the game is not shutting down, but Bungie has made it clear that this is the
end of planned live service content updates for Destiny 2.
That final update was not small either.
It was a massive send-off for the game, packed with sandbox changes, rewards and
returning content.
The update also brought a big jump in player numbers on Steam and other platforms,
showing that Destiny still has a loyal audience
when Bungie gets players a reason to come back.
Keep in mind, the numbers were so strong on Steam,
it was damn near renegades and agifate numbers together.
Okay.
And double marathon speak, but who's dick measuring?
But behind that player spike,
the big picture has not looked good.
Bloomberg previously reported that Bungie
was planning significant layoffs
after the final Destiny 2 update to put no Destiny 3 currently in active development,
and no new project greenlit for the Destiny team.
Now we have another report on this front, and it's definitely not looking good.

The latest claim comes from French journalist Sylvain, who shared on X that Bungie could
be hit by massive layoffs this summer, according to him.
He has heard that at least 50% of Bungie's workforce could be affected, including
both permanent employees and contractors.

Bungie, Sony have not officially announced this number
even Bloomberg's early reports did not give an exact figure. I don't know, Jason Schreyer
said significant layoffs. So even if the 50% number ends up being off, it would not be
surprising the final number is high. Bungee has already gone through major cuts, Destiny
2's active elements ending, Marathon has had a difficult road, and Sony has not greenlit
a new Destiny project.
But Bungie's workforce situation to perspective the studio had around 1600 employees before
its first major layoffs in 2023.
Based on comments from former Bungie chief legal officer Don McGowan after the October
2023 cuts, Bungie was later reported to have around 13 or 1350 employees in January 2024.
Not including contractors or Sony employees.
Guys, that's crazy dude.
realize what that means. We are going from a 1600 man studio down to we are potentially
dropping down to 400. And I'm going to be honest, I don't think this is going to be the
last set of layoffs because I just don't see how Marathon can support that size of a of
a workforce. And, you know, again, I'm not trying to bring hate to Marathon here.

I think Destiny 2 was during the moment that the game plan became, we need to size down Destiny.
Again, I think this is just my assessment here. I think the goal was always to size down Destiny,
launch marathon. And I'm, you know, you guys are saying like, there's no way in hell, Sony ever
thought that marathon was going to hit big numbers. You fucking bet they did. I'm telling you,
they looked at, they looked at marathon and probably thought, okay, well, Bungie did Halo.
Of course, they had their time in the 90s, but let's talk about when they really
They started hitting the big, they did HALO, essentially ran with that for a decade.
They did destiny, ran with that for a decade.
And they were probably expecting that out of marathon.
And so the game plan was get marathon out the door.
And unfortunately, you could write a book on all the ways that got fucked.

that the game just clearly was not ready to ship even last year, the fact that arc raiders
and Embark beat them to the punch at their very own game, and then marathon launching
this year to good reviews, good, good, good credit scores, but not enough players.
So ensure before 2023 layoffs around 1600 employees after October 2023, around 1,350 employees
July, 2024, another 220 were laid off.
So this is post-final shape with 155 roles moved to Sony with 155 roles.
Again, uh, Sony started team LFG, which is making what was the incubation project code.

They were following the trend in a backfire.
But man, I know I talk about RuneScape and JigEx a lot, but I saw these lessons being
learned in real time back in 2020-2013.
that studio came to realization. They said, Hey, we can either be mediocre and making
a lot of different games. I'm not saying mediocre. I'm talking like mediocre to shit and making
a lot of different games because yes, they had they had executives that came in. They
were all big about pushing into this multi IP front. They talked about the same exact
things, a risk assessment, having multiple games, having multiple revenue streams, but
the realization finally hit them. We can either make all these other games that won't capture
really any significant audience or we can do RuneScape and just do really, really good
with one fucking game really commit all of our resources to one fucking game.
And I did it.
They committed all the resources that making just runescape.
Now it was runescape classic old school runescape and runescape three.
But the point is, is they focus on the runescape name.
It's why what they just launched a survival game a year ago, right?
Early access.
What's it called?
Dragon Wilds RuneScape.
Why?
Because they know RuneScape is the bread and butter.
They know that RuneScape is bigger than Jagex.
Bungie doesn't like, I mean, look, I think Bungie leadership at one time or the leadership
that was there at one time, didn't like the idea that Destiny was bigger than Bungie.

sole game that bungee should have focused on.

in an AB test fashion, they look at final shape numbers, they look at Marathon's numbers
if it would have launched in 2024, and they make the decision right then and there.
How do we need to proceed for it just didn't happen that way, man.

You know, I've been relentlessly positive about the update, which I still am, and there
is good news in the sense that it is very cool to see that Destiny has maintained

But, you know, there's some rumors going around about what's happening with Bungie, there's

know, what happens now?
Like, okay, so it's a lot of bad news.
Some of this is like already public information, some of this is like me poking around.
But there was this thing going around from a French journalist who I don't know who said
that 50% of Bungie is being laid off soon.
I am not confident in exact percentages, so I'm not going to like confirm that.
But there are going to be significant layoffs at Bungie, unfortunately.
This is not the first time this has been said.

And I mean it's inevitable given the situation that we're in.
If you discontinue your biggest game, which at least half of your employees are working
on and you do not have a greenlit project to switch them to, you are not going to
throw like 300, 400 devs over to Marathon, which they've already moved some over.
And then there's just, you know, what do you do with them in their view other than lay
them off?
Like the whole point of this bunch of stuff is that they are burning cash and they are
unprofitable and paying hundreds more people to even go work on marathon if you're, say,
throwing all your eggs in the marathon basket or having them do something that literally
just got greenlit when something like that would require a more smaller team to get
started.

and a Destiny 3 would cost 500 million.
And even if those aren't exact numbers,
they're probably not out of the realm of possibilities.
So we are going to be scaling back in many, many ways.
And it is frustrating to see that this is not
happening with other somewhat similar games.
Warframe is just going to live forever.
And that has found a way to retain its player count
to a significant degree.
And then I just posted about, like, I didn't realize this,
the division just launched, the division two just launched
a huge update and is continuing to make at least some amount
of content and that is while they are making the division three.
And this is Ubisoft, you know, not exactly the best
of project managers on a good day.
And yet somehow Sony and Bungie cannot make this work,
which like seeing this update, it feels like they're,
I mean, dude, Ubisoft is still, they still greenlit a division three.
And let me just say, I like the division a lot, but let me tell you how bad of a time
Ubisoft has had.
If you bought Ubisoft stock, if you would have bought Ubisoft five years ago, you would
be down nearly 92%.
you would have went from $59 to share the five.
And even they, Green Letter Division 3, has to have been a way forward to some degree,
even if it was reduced, if they fixed so many of the things that were wrong with the
the launch of the portal and edge of fate and stuff,
even if it was smaller content,
I think that they could have probably reduced costs enough
to make Destiny living on something
that they should at least consider.
Totally atomizing the entire team down to like
the people who do hot fixes seems incredibly short-sighted
and reeks of just horrific mismanagement of Bungie
and this franchise that is like
an all-time live service franchise in an era
where you are allegedly trying to look for live service hits.
And like, I know Sony got fleeced by, you know,
Pete Parsons and the Bungie leadership
in terms of like the, it being very overvalued,
but like they're still valuing it
like a $3 billion asset, some.
You know, I've often said, I wonder,
why did Bungie, they got the lease in the studio.
They could have expanded with the size of their workforce.
and expand with demand, which would have been the proper way of doing things.
Unless you have to look the parts.
You see Pete may have wanted Bungie to look the parts.
It's 200 or some thousand square foot studio fully amped up.
All dulled out.
Sony comes in, they're like, hey, what's happening?
Sony walks in, they're like, wow, this place is pretty nice.

Do might have just been flexing just to get the biggest price point possible

counter to everything else they're doing. They've lost outright just hundreds of
millions of dollars on these other live service offerings. I cannot see anything
in the pipeline that seems like it's going to be a live service hit for them,
whether that's fair games or the Horizon Hunters gathering. It has plenty of
problems with its single-player games like Naughty Dog not making an entire
game for an entire console generation and one that's gonna cost, I don't

And that is going to be a game most people play for 40,
50 hours and then move on with no microtransactions.

But if you're going to put that kind of motion behind that sort
of game, and you're not going to do that with,
what would almost certainly be a profitable live service?
Like if you could get costs even remotely in line,
that seems crazy to me. But all of the seeming crazy, all of this, like, you know, us being
aghast that, like, this hasn't moved the needle and that these layoffs are moving forward
and that support for the game is just being obliterated. As of now, like, that's what's
happening. And not to say that things cannot change, but we are getting really close to
some likely deadlines for, you know, these layoffs and end of support and things like
that and we are we're too far down the road I think for that to be reversed and even if this
update managed to get this many players and you know set couple the the player count temporarily
it's just not enough to look for like a week of that or a month of that is not going to be
enough for Sony to green light a 500 million dollar game like that that is not going to move
the needle specifically I'm not sure there would have been a number I think this could have broken
the all-time concurrent peak and they still probably wouldn't have done it like I don't think we really
had a chance here as much as we wanted to support things and then there's this whole debate about
like should you support marathon or hate marathon or whatever I don't know if either option
really matters I think it's better to support marathon just because it's it's less shitty
I know everyone thinks I hate Marathon, but I'm just really reporting the numbers, which
are not good.

outside of like showing all the people
that worked really hard on this at Bungie
that we really love what they made
and that we're going out on a good note here.

where they interviewed a bunch of ex-Bungie people
and like what they're all proud of and stuff.
And like it's really, you know, kind of touching to read
And even I underestimated this update.
I previously, I heard about it.
I'm like, oh, well, monument of triumph
is just gonna be like upgraded moments of triumph
and like nothing they were talking about.
It sounds like crazy good.
And then they talked about a lot more stuff
and I heard from people like working on this
and they're like, hey, like don't be an asshole.
Like this is a ton of stuff.
Okay, okay, I'm sorry.
And then it's like, oh no, shit.
I was very wrong and this is awesome.
So that was, it's been very cool to see.
I've really enjoyed this just totally obliterating
my expectations.
And I don't know, I plan to play this for a long time.
It may be in and out, it may be just stupid things
that I wanna do, like collect all the catalysts
or whatever, but I'm not ready to just leave it
behind forever.
But like there's no way that we're going to see it live on in the way it needs to over time.
You add no live updates to a game, player count will drop, matchmaking will get harder, etc., etc.,
our friends will leave, and it's, I think it's always going to be frustrating.
And I guess, you know, the moving through the stages of grief to acceptance, like I guess we have to get to acceptance,
but I don't think we have to completely erase anger
and depression either because that is something
obviously this inspires for very long-time fans.
If I hear anything different,
I guess I may or may not report it.
I don't know, announcing something super early
that might just be a whisper of a rumor
may not be helpful, but I have been looking into this
this whole time and unfortunately I cannot report back
anything good outside of what we see in public,
which is the numbers and how good the update is.
So, you know, I don't know percents of layoffs
and whatever exact timing,
but brace yourself for things not to be good for,
I don't know.
I don't want to say forever,
but it's truly the end of an era
and we will see kind of what Bungie does next,
whether that's how they're trying to transform marathon
and whatever,
or if they get something actually green
that for an incubation project,
I know I would certainly be interested in that,
even if it was something that was years and years away,
hopefully, Destiny-related.
But again, I think this IP is too valuable
to just abandon and light on fire forever.
Makes no sense to me, you would do that.
And if anything, I think this outpouring of support
and people returning show that people
do want to play Destiny.
They just needed a reason to come back and play Destiny.
And a patch that fixes so, so many mistakes
certainly was a big part of that.
but ballooning costs, like huge expectations
and just kind of the industry not really being able
to fit something like this without a lot of concessions
combines with, you know, perhaps poor decision-making
and here we are.
So, sorry to be a downer, you know,
and I don't know, kind of usually a downer
and I haven't been about this update,
but there's been enough stuff flying around
where I thought it was time to make this video.

Unfortunately, unfortunately it seems like Sony's pissed off and it seems like they're
using Bungie and by extension Destiny as their example.
And I don't think this is going to work well for Sony.
really Sony you could come out looking good from this. You really could. You could lean
into this community. You know, people might even look at you and be like, wow, Sony is
that gracious savior. What I will tell you this, I can tell you first hand, many people
in the industry never want to speak ill on Sony, especially developers because that
shit will follow them forever. They will give fucking blacklist and that shit will will
stick with them. And so I wouldn't necessarily expect the developers to come out and talk

Sony does have.
