because we'll have to fire up some games at some point.
So a new Xbox just got announced, not particularly the most exciting thing, considering the timeframe
and turmoil that of which the industry just sort of went through.
We briefly hovered around it a little bit earlier, but a lot more details have come up.
And I'm assuming because GDC is happening very soon that there's a lot of dedicated
time to Xbox at GDC.
So we're likely going to know a lot more about what the hell is happening in the next week
or so around the next week when GDC happens.
So what the hell are you talking about?
What is this?
Let me bring it up.
There was not much information, sadly, but I think it's enough to sort of dissect and
talk about what it means, the good and the bad of what it means, and also my hopes
of what it could be. Not like it really satiates the demand that I personally have, but in terms of
bridging the gap between player bases, you know, maybe, just maybe. So check this out. This is
literally it. It's called Xbox Project Helix, and this is the only thing there is.
very mysterious, you know, seven second long video, Jesus, but, you know, what you hate the
logo? Well, the logo isn't the I don't think it is the logo, right? I don't think that is that
what you're looking at is the logo in itself. I think it's more about the project and what
that's representing, you know?
And the more information that comes up
over the last like few hours,
the more it represents the mixing of two different things,
which is the Xbox player base, a console player base,
and also PC players.
And we've recently had these conversations.
I just got a, not that long ago,
an Xbox like ROG Ally X.
And the whole point of that was like, oh, you know,
this thing has Xbox branding all over it.
Does that mean that, does that mean it can play Xbox games?
That was the first question, dude,
every single person had.
Unfortunately, no.
Unless that Xbox game is made for PC,
does this thing have an opportunity to like, you know,
fire up an Xbox 360 game or some shit?
It does not.
It was like, oh, okay.
Well, all right, that's interesting.
We'll pull up some more of the details so we can talk about it.
The official words that have been said from the new CEO and stuff like that, Xbox.
Project Helix, not to be, you know, confused with Double Helix, that this could be a.

So, and here is the update from the CEO.
Great start to the morning, the team Xbox,
where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox,
including Project Helix,
the codename for the next generation console.
Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games.
Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and
studios at the, at her first GDC next week. So yeah, this is kind
of a big deal. And we've, we've been talking about it. So a
computer, yeah, well, yes and yes. Right. Remember that thing
we were talking about chat, like the Steam box, when the steam
box was announced, and some like high hopes of what this
could possibly be because for those that have not bridged the
gap of PC gaming, even though PC gaming is getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
The concept behind a Steam Box that seemed really interesting to me was that, yeah, Steam
OS is great. These things have existed sort of in the past, but will the new Gabe Cube
be a console that will really bridge the gap, that will prevent people from having to
deal with things where their OS, their operating system, the interface regarding the in-hole
thing will sort of ease you away from being a PC enthusiast, you know?
People want to play PC games while getting the console experience.
And as much as I would say Steam OS and things like that do certainly help, they're not
quite there yet, right?
They're not quite there yet.
People want solutions for PC games to effectively be as plug and play as a console
experience.
To be real, that just doesn't necessarily exist.
We thought they were sort of going
to do that with that Xbox ROG Ally thing.
And when you get into it, it's like, OK, there's some onboarding.
But bro, as soon as you fire up the Xbox ROG Ally,
what is one thing that immediately happens
and starts taking over everything?
Windows updates.
Windows updates all over the place, bro, here and there.
And it's like, it's doing one thing
and it's also running another thing.
It's like, oh my.
So wait a minute.
if I eventually just press this button,
there's Windows Explorer.
I'm like, oh, okay, so this is just a laptop,
pretty much with a cool controller.
It's like, that's, I mean, for me, that's fine
because I'm always gonna be a PC enthusiast
in general, I like being able to run my things,
which is why we all hate Windows 11.
So when you have the Windows 11 experience
like severely compromising everything,
that was kind of a problem.
Still, what is the best case scenario here?
The best case scenario is an affordable, affordable console that bridges the gap of the PC experience
with console games, right?
That allows people that we all know exist that don't want to have to deal with the PC
bullshit and just want to play PC games like they're effectively on a console where your
console will make it able to compromise and make adjustments based on the hardware
immediately and there will have to be a lot of back-end that fixes that don't get me wrong.
Consideration and compatibility and all this kind of stuff, it's like, oh, that sounds like a royal
pain in the ass. And I'm like, yeah, it does. It seems like a lot of effort. But has anybody gone,
has any big hardware manufacturer put that much effort into their operating system that
exclusively is made to do that with all of its compatibility of a bunch of PC games and
also console games that has not happened yet dude. So the biggest the biggest deal of this is like
when you start talking about Xbox and PC games specifically from the CEOs can you get a system
that does that because yeah there's an audience for that and just they're saying to somebody oh
just buy a PC I think the more this and this is where this is where push comes to shove
I think the more PC-like whatever this next next generation console is, the more windows
directly associated, right? The more close it is to PC slash Windows 11 more than anything,
the less of a chance it has to make anybody give a shit. And then that comes at the
compromise of also price, because the price of making something have that higher level of
compatibility to actually run a whole bunch of modern PC games in a pretty decent way.
Yeah, that's going to be a big difference, right?
That's going to be a big difference.
Granted, there are people who are like, that's just a PC though.
My dude, these systems have been just PCs since the PlayStation 4 era and the Xbox One era.
They've just been PCs.
So that's not necessarily a dig at where we are at in the industry.
That is just the nature of it, dude.
Like all these consoles are just PCs now.
They're not doing anything super unique from one to the other.
Their controllers do something.
They have something that is a little bit better,
like quick resume.
But still, their functionality and abilities
is still completely based on PCs.
So it's not like we're looking at cell processors
or any wild shit now.
These things are doing the same thing.
That being said, there's an opportunity for them
to bridge that gap.
It's just that this is gonna come
at the expense of compatibility, man.
Like if you're gonna have a console
that bridges the gap between Xbox and PC games,
like what kind of PC games are we talking?
Like is this a steam?
Is this just like Windows Store PC games?
Like what is happening?
We all know that Xbox,
Brother Halo's coming out on PlayStation.
Like Xbox has almost no interest
in being a console exclusive sort of platform anymore.
But I think we, based on the way a lot of people
were hyping up the game in box and all that kind of stuff
that was recently just announced
and has not, does not actually exist yet.
A lot of people were really hoping for something
that will bridge the gap between PC players
and like console players
and put something all on one platform.
Yeah, no, we want that.
It seems really hard,
but mediocrity isn't gonna be the thing
that is going to bring any console up to the standards
that we're looking for,
like things are gonna have to do some crazy shit.
And it's pretty obvious that Microsoft right now
is in a spot where their console hardware
isn't necessarily blowing everyone's minds
because they're putting their games on everything, dude.
So they need to have the console
that sort of like does these things, man,
that is able to pull off this shit, right?
They need to have the console that does this.
So, yeah, that's kind of my hope of what Project Helix is.
The name also makes a lot of sense, like the Helix is an X, I get you, but the whole point
of a Helix, like a double Helix, like, is to bridge the gap between two different things
and make them feel interchanged, like, yeah, yeah, that's that everything that they're
talking about pretty much sounds like the things that we're discussing by merging
these two things together, which is the PC audience and the Xbox audience.
And it's like, I think I wanted that with the, the rogue ally and it was pretty much a portable
PC.
Isn't that what a PC is already know?
PCs cannot just play, um, like Xbox games and Xbox backwards compatible games as a reminder,
like for people like me, one of the coolest things about an Xbox series X, an Xbox series
S is how many goddamn games that bitch can play.
And it can play a lot, dude, going back to many console generations.
There was a huge portion of the Xbox One's life cycle when Xbox really was having to
try and they were having to get people on their side before games pass.
What were they doing, chat?
They were working their butt off of backwards compatibility for 360 and original Xbox games
to make it so that, oh wow, they stopped eventually because they leaned into games pass.
But they were like, hey, so you know, here's a whole bunch of crazy compatibility going
back several years, like going back to the mid 2000s.
I still wish they didn't stop.
It was clear that their goals went in different directions.
But to answer your question, the difference between that
and just a PC is that, yeah, with PCs,
you technically can play a lot of those games
through emulation, no, I get it.
But like in an official device that does that shit,
where it's like, this plays your PC games,
is it gonna play it at the level of a 4090, 5096?
No, it's not gonna do that.
But that compatibility and figuring out
that compatibility is a big deal, right?
That's a pretty big deal.
So we're asking, I think the idea, what this sets up in my head,
is that an Xbox should be something that bridges the gap that
makes it so that, hey, they should be the ones handling
the crazy-ass compatibility of shit.
And maybe we shouldn't, right?
Maybe players should not be the ones that are like,
ticking this and ticking that.
Most people don't want that.
Most people don't like that.
That are people that are not interested in PC,
that are completely fine with console gaming experiences.
Don't give a shit about all the little bells
and whistles, and ticks, and buttons
that are in the options menu.
They specifically don't want to deal with that shit.
And that's the stuff that's fascinating.
It's like, if Microsoft handles that, will it be good?
And will they be able to find a way
to make that stuff good?
So if it's a PC game, how do you
think they make an acceptable config for a game?
That's exactly what the promotion is.
The promotion is that at what level of compatibility
can you make this console that will be apparently
more technologically capable,
have compatibility with a broad spectrum of PC games?
Is it going to be everything?
Is it going, bitch, I want you to fire up
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transform, the PC version.
Are they gonna have compatibility for that?
No, no, like that's not gonna be there,
but still it's like, if they're able to tackle
like the last generation or so of like PC games
that are relatively big ones and stuff
and also offer a baseline median of like compatibility
than maybe dude, that sounds hard.

because you have to start asking questions.
Does that work with Steam?
Does it work with Epic Game Store?
Does it work specifically on Windows 11 like store?
Does it work only on Windows Store?

how you can bridge these audiences together
and make this shit work.
And it's like, yeah, you have to provide a service
that doesn't really exist.
And something that just gets people on board
and you don't have to deal with shit.

Is it going to be to be able to deliver on everything?

So we have to start asking on the back end.
It's like, OK, so what is everybody else doing?
Well, this pisser tech that's going on at PlayStation
is starting to make some strides.
It's taken a long time.
DLSS stuff that's happening over at Nintendo
in cooperation with obviously AMD and NVIDIA,
those sort of things are providing software
and experiences that the hardware does in the backend.
That isn't just sticking in more RAM
or sticking in an expansion pack.
No, they're figuring out how to make things better
over time with upscaling.
So it's kind of working.
It's kind of like, oh, okay.
So this is pretty,
I already expect something like that to be happening here
if it's hardware,
but at the same point it's like
that directly benefits compatibility
because if you just have a ton of games
that are PC games that you're trying to make work
on a console and also run the console games,
then in what way can you provide the experience
to be better for the console games that you had before
and also PC games?
Starting to talking about really creative upscaling things, if not frame generation or things like that, maybe.
I'm just saying maybe. That could be the spot where they find a way to bridge the gap between the users
and to give them something that hasn't really exactly been done before.
So these are all the hopes, right? This is the hopes of what it could be.
Does that interest somebody like me? Not really.
I mean for this this feels like it's almost designed for people that aren't for PC gaming, right?
Which exists? This is a lot. This is this could be a sizable amount of people that are really interested in this shit
So a steam machine for Windows more like a steam machine, but you got a really fucking try like a steam machine that

it more like the steam machine does all of that shit for you.
And they figure it out.
And they figure out the compatibility.
And they figure out the interface
to make it not just like a steam machine,
to make it all curated and solvable.

Now that we're out of our fantasy world,
which is the whole thing that we were talking about before.

Now the reality sets in.
Dudes, how the hell are these guys announcing a new console
in this current economic situation?

Like, there is the PlayStation 5 Pro is like $700.
And that's already like, everyone looked at that shit
and went, holy moly.
I don't know how you produce a console in the next like year or two.
Especially considering what just happened over the last couple of days
also in this country on top of all the other shit.
It's like, my dude, this thing is going to be so expensive.
It's going to be insane.
There is no chance the gas prices are starting to go up, my dude.
Like, I don't know, I don't know how you create something that has that level of compatibility
and memory for under $1,000 and $1,000 feels generous now, but feels generous.

I don't think people are looking at this stuff being a cloud device as being like interesting.

user base, to put people into their store, to buy games, to buy the compatibility, to
get their old games, like all that kind of stuff that will happen. But still, I don't
even see a reality where that can happen in the next, for next few years. I hope
it does and I hope it's like competitive and they have to be competitive because almost
all of the popular consoles that have existed in the past have been at the behest of losing
money at the start to build a user base to make the money on game sales to make the money
on additional sales outside of that memory cards and controllers and all that kind of
shit.
That's what I eventually makes the money, you know.
So that's what I'm thinking.
The next darkest aspect of this is that I don't mind this system having AI, quote unquote.
You could put AI upscaling all over this bitch.

You could make all of the smartest models that NVIDIA and AMD and all these bastards
have been making over the years to upscale shit, DLSS, and all this like FSR tech, and
this shit is awesome. AI upscaling is godlike, dude. This is literally like saving performance
in many ways in the industry. There's a big difference between AI upscaling and generative
AI, and also AI bullshit that you have to talk to, and it gives you shitty answers

you say like AI. Yeah, to a degree, I'm okay with that because Xbox does need AI upscaling.

Compared to the rest, dude, everything else

And the entire game is built on a premise of gimmicks.

gives you a new gimmick that you can mess around with and that gimmick comes down to like unique
PlayStation things throw Kratos' axe shoot the guns from uncharted like all these kind of things

they're so cool like every time I get like the frog punches Ripley's like ooh let me play
and she just sits here and punches the shit out of everything and all this stuff is flying
all over the place particle effects and things and you go and you run on these things and
they feel tactile it's like damn dude this game makes me feel like a god damn kid again
it really does so that's where I think that game deserves all of its flowers my dude like
it's so in terms of it being an actual video game and the whole point of what video games
are going back to like the 80s and shit it does very well shockingly is a ridiculous
amount of effort and emphatic enthusiasm for everything that came before it. So I really
like it. I think it's fun. It wasn't a game where it's just like, oh Ripley just likes this,
you know? So we're just going to run through and I'm going to beat it with her. My dude,
we literally found everyone. We found every fucking bot. Now I'm in like the final
moments of the game where we're trying to discover and explore the last like 15.
