A new smoothbore"}, {"start": 2025.96, "end": 2033.04, "text": " main gun compatible with NATO ammunition and 40-digital plug-and-play architecture. Challenger"}, {"start": 2033.04, "end": 2038.8000000000002, "text": " 3 embodies all the traditional qualities of the British main battle tank, hard-hitting"}, {"start": 2038.8000000000002, "end": 2043.64, "text": " and heavily armoured, but is also capable of infinite development as the situation"}, {"start": 2043.64, "end": 2049.88, "text": " dictates. This is the face of the future, a modern main battle tank designed for NATO"}, {"start": 2049.88, "end": 2057.04, "text": " high intensity combat. I'm delighted to introduce Nick Bertran from RBSL. Now, just to begin with, and"}, {"start": 2063.08, "end": 2068.96, "text": " certainly to the uninitiated, this will look remarkably similar to Challenger 1 and Challenger"}, {"start": 2068.96, "end": 2072.76, "text": " So in broad terms, what's different?"}, {"start": 2072.76, "end": 2073.76, "text": " What is improved?"}, {"start": 2073.76, "end": 2076.76, "text": " Well, so much has changed."}, {"start": 2076.76, "end": 2078.8, "text": " It's hard to know where to start."}, {"start": 2078.8, "end": 2082.68, "text": " But in the interest of brevity, the first thing is the armour."}, {"start": 2082.68, "end": 2087.92, "text": " So this is the latest iteration of British modular armour, which has proved its success"}, {"start": 2087.92, "end": 2090.76, "text": " in Ukraine on Challenger 2."}, {"start": 2090.76, "end": 2093.28, "text": " Secondly, it's the new gun."}, {"start": 2093.28, "end": 2101.4, "text": " So the Smoothbore 120mm L55 gun is a NATO standard weapon and it can take any ammunition"}, {"start": 2101.4, "end": 2106.36, "text": " from an accredited NATO country which will bring huge logistic improvements."}, {"start": 2106.36, "end": 2114.28, "text": " And then finally this is the first all digital main battle tank turret in the world."}, {"start": 2114.28, "end": 2120.34, "text": " It will massively simplify the commander's job and for the first time for example we"}, {"start": 2120.34, "end": 2125.86, "text": " We have 24-hour day and night hunter-killer capability so that the commander and gunner"}, {"start": 2125.86, "end": 2129.02, "text": " can hand off targets to one another seamlessly."}, {"start": 2129.02, "end": 2133.7400000000002, "text": " And there are some people who have queried the idea that the tank has a place on the"}, {"start": 2133.7400000000002, "end": 2135.46, "text": " future battlefield."}, {"start": 2135.46, "end": 2140.2200000000003, "text": " How exactly would you say the Challenger 3 is adapted to cope with all that?"}, {"start": 2140.2200000000003, "end": 2143.54, "text": " Well, as you said, the battlefield is changing."}, {"start": 2143.54, "end": 2150.22, "text": " The main thing is that the battlefield is now so heavily scanned and surveyed that we"}, {"start": 2150.22, "end": 2154.2599999999998, "text": " have to really expect to be picked up and therefore probably engaged."}, {"start": 2154.2599999999998, "end": 2156.9, "text": " So we have to be able to survive a few hits."}, {"start": 2156.9, "end": 2161.34, "text": " British Modorama, fitted on this vehicle, will enable us to do that."}, {"start": 2161.34, "end": 2170.82, "text": " Secondly, we have AI in the vehicle, so the commander's station is supported with"}, {"start": 2170.82, "end": 2174.86, "text": " automatic tracking and monitoring of targets."}, {"start": 2174.86, "end": 2179.5, "text": " We have an active protection system, which is capable of defeating incoming missiles"}, {"start": 2179.5, "end": 2181.5800000000004, "text": " and automatically detecting them."}, {"start": 2181.5800000000004, "end": 2190.5, "text": " We have a laser warning system, which will cue the commander to laser threats and remains"}, {"start": 2190.5, "end": 2195.5800000000004, "text": " at the heart of the British Army's 2040-40 battlefield design."}, {"start": 2195.5800000000004, "end": 2198.7400000000002, "text": " Now we've dealt with lethality."}, {"start": 2198.7400000000002, "end": 2199.7400000000002, "text": " We have dealt with protection."}, {"start": 2199.7400000000002, "end": 2205.94, "text": " I suppose the final element, the last bit of the iron triangle, mobility."}, {"start": 2205.94, "end": 2208.3, "text": " How is Challenger 3 improved?"}, {"start": 2208.3, "end": 2214.34, "text": " Well the power pack on the vehicle has had some adjustments so that at low revolutions"}, {"start": 2214.34, "end": 2217.98, "text": " you get much higher torque and that means it will be much more agile and manoeuvrable"}, {"start": 2217.98, "end": 2218.98, "text": " at low speeds."}, {"start": 2218.98, "end": 2222.6200000000003, "text": " Yeah, they're still using the Cummins Beads and all right."}, {"start": 2222.6200000000003, "end": 2229.46, "text": " Secondly we have the Generation 3 Hydragas which effectively enables the tank to"}, {"start": 2229.46, "end": 2235.46, "text": " squash bumps more easily, which means that power from the engine can go into speed and maneuverability"}, {"start": 2235.46, "end": 2240.7, "text": " rather than overcoming bumps. The idea here is that the males go to strong points, the females"}, {"start": 2697.4, "end": 2704.22, "text": " use machine gun fire to knock out the infantry and trenches to cut them down. No, I think they're thinking the better of it. I think they're very wise to do that. They're retreating, they're pushing off, and they will live to fight another day."}, {"start": 2740.46, "end": 2746.46, "text": " The Mark 4 is one of the most important tanks during the First World War, and one of the slowest."}, {"start": 2746.46, "end": 2756.46, "text": " It was designed to break through the barbed wire and mud of no-man's land, and to provide support for surrounding infantry, which it did at a whopping two and a half miles per hour."}, {"start": 2756.46, "end": 2762.96, "text": " These early British tanks were far from perfect and the Mark IV was an improved version of the previous models,"}, {"start": 2762.96, "end": 2767.26, "text": " but despite this, it's still probably one of the last tanks you'd ever want to be in."}, {"start": 2767.26, "end": 2773.06, "text": " The entire crew is positioned around a 105 horsepower engine, which was not only loud,"}, {"start": 2773.06, "end": 2779.26, "text": " but was incredibly hot, bringing the internal temperature of the tank up to 50 degrees Celsius."}, {"start": 2779.26, "end": 2783.46, "text": " Due to the exhaust design, carbon monoxide leaked into the cab,"}, {"start": 2783.46, "end": 2787.78, "text": " which meant crews operated whilst suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning."}, {"start": 2788.1, "end": 2792.2, "text": " As if that wasn't enough, they'd also be breathing in fumes from the petrol,"}, {"start": 2792.2, "end": 2797.86, "text": " cordite and smoke building up on the inside, which made it a lot harder to see and think."}, {"start": 2798.52, "end": 2802.5, "text": " And speaking of the crew, the tank would be operated by 8 men."}, {"start": 2802.86, "end": 2805.3, "text": " Sometimes when tanks were crossing muddy ground,"}, {"start": 2805.3, "end": 2807.78, "text": " tank commanders even walked ahead of their tanks,"}, {"start": 2807.78, "end": 2812.86, "text": " testing the thickness of the mud with a cane to see whether or not it was suitable for the tank to cross."}, {"start": 2812.86, "end": 2817.26, "text": " The driver, funnily enough, drives but they aren't able to steer the tank."}, {"start": 2817.26, "end": 2821.06, "text": " They can only select whether or not the tank drives forward or in reverse."}, {"start": 2821.06, "end": 2825.06, "text": " The steering was left to two other members of the crew, the Gearsmen."}, {"start": 2825.06, "end": 2829.6600000000003, "text": " These two men changed the gears of the individual tracks, allowing the tank to turn."}, {"start": 2829.6600000000003, "end": 2833.06, "text": " Because of the required communication between the commander and the Gearsmen"}, {"start": 2833.06, "end": 2836.6600000000003, "text": " and how loud the tank was, it was common to use hand signals."}, {"start": 2836.6600000000003, "end": 2840.46, "text": " The final four crew members are two gunners and two loaders"}, {"start": 2840.46, "end": 2843.1, "text": " who loaded and fired the six pounder guns."}, {"start": 2843.6, "end": 2846.42, "text": " There are also two types of these infantry tanks."}, {"start": 2846.5, "end": 2848.46, "text": " This particular one is a male tank,"}, {"start": 2848.54, "end": 2850.66, "text": " which means it has machine guns in the Swanson,"}, {"start": 2850.7400000000002, "end": 2852.78, "text": " as well as a six pounder gun."}, {"start": 2852.86, "end": 2856.1, "text": " And these tanks were primarily used against defensive positions."}, {"start": 2856.54, "end": 2860.3, "text": " This is a female tank, which is armed with machine guns only."}, {"start": 2860.38, "end": 2863.7, "text": " These focused on infantry and often drove alongside trenches,"}, {"start": 2863.78, "end": 2865.86, "text": " allowing the crews to fire down into them."}, {"start": 2865.94, "end": 2869.5, "text": " In this case, the final four crew members were all machine gunners."}, {"start": 2869.5, "end": 2874.5, "text": " Suffice to say, Tank Warfare has come a long way over the past century."}, {"start": 2899.5, "end": 2910.5, "text": " of British armoured vehicles going through the World War II period."}, {"start": 2910.5, "end": 2916.46, "text": " Those of you who know your wartime history, 1940, the British Expeditionary Force has"}, {"start": 2916.46, "end": 2923.34, "text": " a pretty torrid time out in France. We leave much of our equipment at Dunkirk. So the British"}, {"start": 2923.34, "end": 2930.7400000000002, "text": " Army are looking and the British government are looking for other places to get tanks from,"}, {"start": 2930.7400000000002, "end": 2937.7400000000002, "text": " especially as our own manufacturer tends to go towards aeroplanes to defend Britain and"}, {"start": 2937.7400000000002, "end": 2945.02, "text": " bombers to get back at Germany. So we go to America and order tanks from the Americans"}, {"start": 2945.02, "end": 2952.54, "text": " and this is a ground tank that was used by the British Army. Now we wanted the Americans"}, {"start": 2952.54, "end": 2959.46, "text": " to actually make tanks for us, like the Valentine, the Yellowy tank in the middle there. But"}, {"start": 2959.46, "end": 2963.22, "text": " quite rightly the Americans said, hang on a second, the French are asking us to make"}, {"start": 2963.22, "end": 2968.7799999999997, "text": " tanks too. We're making our own tank, why don't you buy that? So we very quickly buy"}, {"start": 2968.7799999999997, "end": 2974.18, "text": " into the M3 Grant. We're going to see that later on, we can talk about it more, and"}, {"start": 2974.18, "end": 2980.7, "text": " the famous M4 Sherman. Meanwhile, back in Britain, Vickers comes along, we're now"}, {"start": 2980.7000000000003, "end": 2987.9800000000005, "text": " gearing up and it says to the war office in 1938 we can also make you an infantry tank."}, {"start": 2987.9800000000005, "end": 2993.5000000000005, "text": " Now that dinosaur that looked like it's going around in the background that's actually the"}, {"start": 2993.5000000000005, "end": 3001.82, "text": " fourth type of infantry tank Britain ordered 1940 we changed the order you've got to get it right"}, {"start": 3001.82, "end": 3008.86, "text": " in a year they said to the company Voxel who is a parent body they working with the tank"}, {"start": 3008.86, "end": 3016.2200000000003, "text": " designers at Woolwich. This particular one is the Mark III Churchill that sees action at Dieppe"}, {"start": 3016.2200000000003, "end": 3022.86, "text": " and it sees action in North Africa at the Battle of Alamein and it's got that thick armor an"}, {"start": 3022.86, "end": 3029.98, "text": " infantry tank needs. The Mark VII Churchill has got thicker armor on the front than the famous"}, {"start": 3029.98, "end": 3036.3, "text": " German Tiger tank and the very first manuals that went out with these tanks to the troops."}, {"start": 3036.3, "end": 3041.88, "text": " If you look at the first page of the manual and it says sorry lads we know"}, {"start": 3041.88, "end": 3047.1800000000003, "text": " this has got problems but we think we better give it to you now than later."}, {"start": 3047.1800000000003, "end": 3052.54, "text": " It's got a lovely big roomy interior, it's got doors on the side, we can do"}, {"start": 3052.54, "end": 3057.78, "text": " other things with this vehicle so we're starting to find the church you're"}, {"start": 3057.78, "end": 3062.3, "text": " being used for. You've seen all your D-Day programs, things it can carry a"}, {"start": 3062.3, "end": 3069.3, "text": " mortar, a petard mortar, it can carry a bridge. Late 30s, part of this rearmament program,"}, {"start": 3069.3, "end": 3076.0600000000004, "text": " they get three companies to come up with a new specification for a scouting vehicle,"}, {"start": 3076.0600000000004, "end": 3082.42, "text": " a scout car, not an armored car, it's for scouting. The Dingo, it can go 55 miles"}, {"start": 3082.42, "end": 3087.1800000000003, "text": " an hour on the open road, it's got five reverse gears, you've got an inch of armor"}, {"start": 3087.1800000000003, "end": 3092.1000000000004, "text": " plate on the front to protect you, carries a 19 radio set. You carry a"}, {"start": 3092.1000000000004, "end": 3096.42, "text": " brand gun but really your role is not to fight the enemy, your role is to find"}, {"start": 3096.42, "end": 3101.38, "text": " out where they are, back off quick, get that message back to the main force"}, {"start": 3101.38, "end": 3106.76, "text": " formation. Now that Valentine there as it moves around that's a Mark 9 model"}, {"start": 3106.76, "end": 3110.78, "text": " it's got the larger gun on it, the British 6-pounder. They got rid of one"}, {"start": 3110.78, "end": 3114.26, "text": " of the crew, we had a three-man, pretty small turret, they got rid of"}, {"start": 3114.26, "end": 3119.46, "text": " one of the crew members in the turret to squeeze the bigger gun in, because as the war progresses"}, {"start": 3119.46, "end": 3126.1600000000003, "text": " and we'll see this again later on, it becomes a gun vs armour race in some of the areas"}, {"start": 3126.1600000000003, "end": 3132.92, "text": " of tank design. But there goes our Valentine, as I mentioned, 25% of British tank production"}, {"start": 3132.92, "end": 3138.2200000000003, "text": " in the Second World War and sea service all over the place, just like the Matilda"}, {"start": 3138.2200000000003, "end": 3145.1400000000003, "text": " that's leading it off there. The Matilda sees action in France in 1940, fourth and seventh"}, {"start": 3145.1400000000003, "end": 3154.94, "text": " raw tank regiment with Matilda I's and Matilda II's, 16 Matilda II's, cause mayhem."}, {"start": 3154.94, "end": 3160.3, "text": " A show featuring my favourite, the Matilda II, another incredible restoration by the"}, {"start": 3160.3, "end": 3164.6600000000003, "text": " Tainte Museum and of course Queen of the Desert was not to love about the Matilda"}, {"start": 3164.66, "end": 3168.62, "text": " quite right controversial opinion I think the world war two best tank of"}, {"start": 3168.62, "end": 3171.8999999999996, "text": " world war two might well have been the Matilda 2 is one of the few vehicles in"}, {"start": 3171.8999999999996, "end": 3178.8599999999997, "text": " service at the beginning and still in service at the end anyway moving on our"}, {"start": 3178.8599999999997, "end": 3183.8199999999997, "text": " next display celebrates two of the vital vehicles of world war two's that for"}, {"start": 3183.8199999999997, "end": 3188.2999999999997, "text": " some reason the British decided to name after American Civil War generals it"}, {"start": 3188.2999999999997, "end": 3191.2599999999998, "text": " features one of our guest vehicles from the Heritage War Institute in"}, {"start": 3191.26, "end": 3196.86, "text": " Belgium who very kindly brought over the Sherman Jumbo Forest this year and we'll catch up with the"}, {"start": 3196.86, "end": 3202.0600000000004, "text": " team at the Heritage War Institute later on but now let's go over to the arena."}, {"start": 3204.0600000000004, "end": 3210.94, "text": " Now the medium tank for Americans they give an M number it's even it's experimental as soon as"}, {"start": 3210.94, "end": 3218.0600000000004, "text": " they approve it it's given an M1 number so M1 M2 etc they're about to build a new medium"}, {"start": 3218.06, "end": 3224.18, "text": " tank they're going to call the M2. They realise because of reports coming back from what's"}, {"start": 3224.18, "end": 3231.06, "text": " going on in Europe it won't be good enough. The European observers from the American Army"}, {"start": 3231.06, "end": 3238.7799999999997, "text": " they've seen the Germans with a 75mm gun on their Panzer IVs. It's only small, short,"}, {"start": 3238.7799999999997, "end": 3244.06, "text": " but it's powerful. So they say you're going to need a 75mm gun. So they're about to"}, {"start": 3244.06, "end": 3249.58, "text": " start making the M2 tank and they stop and they say no we're going to do a new"}, {"start": 3249.58, "end": 3253.74, "text": " tank with a turret that's going to turn out to be like this one the Sherman"}, {"start": 3253.74, "end": 3258.94, "text": " it's going to have a 75 millimeter gun this famous later version of it's got"}, {"start": 3258.94, "end": 3265.42, "text": " the 76 millimeter but we're not ready yet so they make an interim model tank"}, {"start": 3265.42, "end": 3272.94, "text": " called the M3 and that becomes for Britain the Grand Tank for America the"}, {"start": 3272.94, "end": 3279.18, "text": " the Lee tank. Now other tanks, if you go in the museum, you'll see the French Char-B"}, {"start": 3279.18, "end": 3284.94, "text": " tank. That's got a gun in the hull as well. The first British Churchill, we saw"}, {"start": 3284.94, "end": 3291.38, "text": " the Mark III. That also had a howitzer in the hull. So the idea behind that is"}, {"start": 3291.38, "end": 3295.82, "text": " trying to find a way of putting a bigger gun on the tank until we're"}, {"start": 3295.82, "end": 3298.82, "text": " ready to make the new turret."}, {"start": 3298.82, "end": 3304.7400000000002, "text": " And that new turret is designed with French help."}, {"start": 3304.7400000000002, "end": 3308.54, "text": " The French have an engineer who's ordering tanks"}, {"start": 3308.54, "end": 3312.78, "text": " from the Americans in 1940 called Jean Monnet."}, {"start": 3312.78, "end": 3316.36, "text": " He's brought out all lots of engineers from France."}, {"start": 3316.36, "end": 3320.2200000000003, "text": " France falls, of course, in May, June 1940."}, {"start": 3320.2200000000003, "end": 3323.6200000000003, "text": " So they stay behind, and they help the Americans put"}, {"start": 3323.62, "end": 3330.02, "text": " together the casting skills so they can make that new M4 the Sherman tank. This ends up giving it a layer of"}, {"start": 3335.8599999999997, "end": 3338.8199999999997, "text": " protection. Even that the crews didn't think were enough and sometimes they"}, {"start": 3338.8199999999997, "end": 3344.8199999999997, "text": " go and put concrete or sometimes even sandbags over the front. You're going to see the Panzer III later on today. And as early as 1943 the Germans"}, {"start": 4535.28, "end": 4543.62, "text": " realize, Sturmgesch\u00fctze's are knocking out more tanks than Tigers. So this is a really"}, {"start": 4543.62, "end": 4548.44, "text": " effective bit of kit if you want to spread your money around the place. But that idea"}, {"start": 4548.44, "end": 4555.12, "text": " of what's an attack tank, so the Sherman is there to exploit a gap made in the front"}, {"start": 4555.12, "end": 4560.04, "text": " line, its original design criteria. Don't try and fight other tanks, you might meet"}, {"start": 4560.04, "end": 4566.74, "text": " some. We've got tank destroyers for that, that's what they argue, actually tanks"}, {"start": 4566.74, "end": 4570.88, "text": " inevitably bump into other tanks. So people like, I mentioned that name,"}, {"start": 4570.88, "end": 4575.5, "text": " McNair, he's trying to say to the American tank crew, try not to get"}, {"start": 4575.5, "end": 4580.92, "text": " obsessed with fighting German tanks and try to think of your key role with"}, {"start": 4580.92, "end": 4586.5, "text": " his exploitation. Now that gun, Crystal tell us about, that is one massive"}, {"start": 4586.5, "end": 4593.18, "text": " great gun that Hitler loves on the you carry on Chris. I've got some figures to"}, {"start": 4593.18, "end": 4596.22, "text": " back that up actually for those of you who are into the account side of things."}, {"start": 4596.22, "end": 4605.18, "text": " For a Stug you can lash out 80,000 Reichsmarks. For a Tiger I it's over 300"}, {"start": 4605.18, "end": 4612.06, "text": " 350,000 Reichsmarks so economically these vehicles make a lot of sense. I've never really thought so to be honest."}, {"start": 4780.78, "end": 4786.74, "text": " So this one as well we're lucky to have here we've got a range of armoured"}, {"start": 4786.74, "end": 4791.679999999999, "text": " vehicles that some belong to the Tank Museum some of privately owned that are"}, {"start": 4791.679999999999, "end": 4796.219999999999, "text": " housed here and they're bringing them along so we can show you off that"}, {"start": 4796.219999999999, "end": 4800.94, "text": " hornese that was going around just a bit earlier has come all the way from"}, {"start": 4800.94, "end": 4804.24, "text": " the Netherlands it's a bit of a restoration like many of these"}, {"start": 4804.24, "end": 4810.08, "text": " vehicles now. As you can imagine as time moves on that was actually put together"}, {"start": 4810.08, "end": 4815.24, "text": " from some parts that were found in the Kirlan pocket. It's basically an area"}, {"start": 4815.24, "end": 4820.8, "text": " that was being fought over and defended by the Germans. Wrecks of"}, {"start": 4820.8, "end": 4825.4, "text": " tanks there being dug up. That one particularly has a modern engine. It's"}, {"start": 4825.4, "end": 4830.16, "text": " got the steering system from a 432 armored personnel in it. But again it"}, {"start": 4830.16, "end": 4835.04, "text": " gives us that sense we can see just like our first world war tanks we're not"}, {"start": 4835.04, "end": 4838.5599999999995, "text": " going to run those because they're so rare so the fact that we were able to"}, {"start": 4838.5599999999995, "end": 4842.599999999999, "text": " put those three replicas out earlier on that's another one of these things that"}, {"start": 4842.599999999999, "end": 4846.32, "text": " again you know we're not trying to hide it from anyone you know what's real"}, {"start": 4846.32, "end": 4851.8, "text": " what's not but to be able to have this range of very classic armored"}, {"start": 4851.8, "end": 4856.639999999999, "text": " vehicles going around so you can see there the M5 version of the Stuart the"}, {"start": 4856.64, "end": 4862.320000000001, "text": " later version there as it runs around. Why is it done that way? Well, they actually started"}, {"start": 4862.320000000001, "end": 4868.04, "text": " the Stuart earlier in the 1930s and very early on the Americans had an obsession about putting"}, {"start": 4868.04, "end": 4873.04, "text": " machine guns everywhere on a vehicle. It had two in the front by the driver. It ended"}, {"start": 4873.04, "end": 4879.68, "text": " up having another one in the turret. 37mm gun, which at the time it was copied from"}, {"start": 4879.68, "end": 4887.6, "text": " the German anti-tank gun that was 37mm, the Russian copied it too, and of course after"}, {"start": 4887.6, "end": 4893.08, "text": " those early tank engagements they realised it's not much good if you come across a proper"}, {"start": 4893.08, "end": 4901.68, "text": " German tank like a Panzer III. Hence the need to upgrade to that 75mm gun that we're"}, {"start": 4901.68, "end": 4906.04, "text": " seeing now on the chaff as it moves off, that gun originally was designed to go in"}, {"start": 4906.04, "end": 4911.12, "text": " a Mitchell bomber. Can you believe that way? It was flying around with a gun on to fire"}, {"start": 4911.12, "end": 4921.0, "text": " at ships and they realised it had got a very effective way of taking the recoil instead"}, {"start": 4921.0, "end": 4929.8, "text": " of recuperators, chambers, bit like a shock absorber, to take the recoil action. Right what are they up to? That is a deployment of an"}, {"start": 5418.62, "end": 5424.86, "text": " anti-tank weapon. They're clearly setting up some sort of rear guard I reckon."}, {"start": 5424.86, "end": 5429.74, "text": " That's the cutting-crab moving into position. You don't want to get that"}, {"start": 5429.74, "end": 5433.94, "text": " thing in a firefight but it's brilliant at dropping troops off and getting out"}, {"start": 5433.9400000000005, "end": 5439.02, "text": " there again. At this time you're not going to want to commit all of your force"}, {"start": 5439.02, "end": 5446.460000000001, "text": " so the heavier side of this formation is probably going to bug out. Done a bit of"}, {"start": 5446.460000000001, "end": 5451.500000000001, "text": " reconnaissance nothing's really happening but they know Allied forces are"}, {"start": 5451.500000000001, "end": 5457.580000000001, "text": " coming this way. We have a bit of a hill, and it's a brilliant hill, and we love the hill,"}, {"start": 5537.76, "end": 5545.76, "text": " but it isn't what you're going to be finding in a realistic environment."}, {"start": 5545.76, "end": 5550.76, "text": " They're going to be using that terrain, that wood block, hiding as best as possible."}, {"start": 5550.76, "end": 5553.76, "text": " Here comes the Allied Recky formations."}, {"start": 5553.76, "end": 5558.76, "text": " We've got the two extremes of how to do reconnaissance in the Second World War."}, {"start": 5558.76, "end": 5564.76, "text": " The utility vehicle, the Jeep, the ubiquitous with Allied victory."}, {"start": 5564.76, "end": 5567.76, "text": " It is really very versatile."}, {"start": 5567.76, "end": 5574.76, "text": " It's quite good at providing a very light, small, nimble reconnaissance force."}, {"start": 5574.76, "end": 5580.780000000001, "text": " Then there's a command car, a bit of a motorised runner as it were, taking messages to where"}, {"start": 5580.780000000001, "end": 5581.780000000001, "text": " they need to go."}, {"start": 5581.780000000001, "end": 5587.0, "text": " And as you can see, I was just packing a little bit of extra firepower on top of it, which"}, {"start": 5587.0, "end": 5590.22, "text": " may or may not come in handy."}, {"start": 5590.22, "end": 5597.38, "text": " Behind it, the other end of the spectrum, a chaffee, late war, American light tank."}, {"start": 5597.38, "end": 5601.18, "text": " Built for that reconnaissance role, it packs a punch though."}, {"start": 5601.18, "end": 5609.3, "text": " It is lightweight, there's not much armour, but it is rapid and it has a 75mm."}, {"start": 5609.3, "end": 5616.92, "text": " First American light tank, the M3 Stuart has a 37mm, that is now the same calibre as the"}, {"start": 5616.92, "end": 5618.42, "text": " medium tank, the Sherman."}, {"start": 5618.42, "end": 5625.22, "text": " It's not quite the same gun, that one was developed to operate off the bottom of the"}, {"start": 5625.22, "end": 5626.22, "text": " bomber."}, {"start": 5626.22, "end": 5632.14, "text": " It's a bit more successful than the chaffee, and here's what we're going to see today."}, {"start": 5632.14, "end": 5639.38, "text": " Behind that we have a juice and a half, the iconic American truck of this period."}, {"start": 5639.38, "end": 5645.62, "text": " Very good, they're going long distances, transporting, well basically anything you never want."}, {"start": 5645.62, "end": 5650.12, "text": " Today we have a shed load of infantry in the back."}, {"start": 5650.12, "end": 5655.12, "text": " These armoured formations are useless without infantry providing flank security."}, {"start": 5655.12, "end": 5659.12, "text": " Oh, dear me, that is the anti-tank gun opening up."}, {"start": 5659.12, "end": 5661.12, "text": " The ambush has been sprung."}, {"start": 5661.12, "end": 5665.12, "text": " You don't want to hang about in an unarmoured truck for particularly long."}, {"start": 5665.12, "end": 5668.12, "text": " British infantry are deploying."}, {"start": 5668.12, "end": 5672.12, "text": " Now having to get down, the Germans are pinning them down."}, {"start": 5672.12, "end": 5676.12, "text": " If you look up on the mound, they've got into their second defensive position as well."}, {"start": 5676.12, "end": 5683.12, "text": " This is potentially now the British are being flanked, which is, you know, less than ideal."}, {"start": 5683.12, "end": 5688.12, "text": " A fierce firefight is now breaking out."}, {"start": 5688.12, "end": 5694.12, "text": " Allied formations can't really move. You're going to have to rely on the armour from now on."}, {"start": 5694.12, "end": 5697.12, "text": " Now, have to force their way through."}, {"start": 5697.12, "end": 5703.12, "text": " That jeep is taking a bit of a risk, but that chaffee is hoping its armour's going to do the job."}, {"start": 5703.12, "end": 5709.96, "text": " That is quite close and personal for a light tank."}, {"start": 5709.96, "end": 5713.2, "text": " That doesn't appear to be a successful hit."}, {"start": 5713.2, "end": 5717.84, "text": " The PAK 36 is still opening up."}, {"start": 5717.84, "end": 5722.16, "text": " That chaffee is now suspiciously quiet, so potentially they've just got very, very lucky"}, {"start": 5722.16, "end": 5727.2, "text": " with that PAK 36."}, {"start": 5727.2, "end": 5729.8, "text": " That truck is not going to hang around in the firefight."}, {"start": 5729.8, "end": 5733.08, "text": " It will get blown to smithereens particularly quickly."}, {"start": 5733.08, "end": 5737.08, "text": " that is getting out of there, letting the infantry fight the Germans on foot."}, {"start": 5741.08, "end": 5746.08, "text": " These two formations have bolt action rifles and maybe a bit of extra fire support coming."}, {"start": 5746.08, "end": 5750.08, "text": " The Germans are dropping something on the British positions."}, {"start": 5750.08, "end": 5755.08, "text": " One thing about planning in defensive lines means you can plan in the artillery to come down"}, {"start": 5755.08, "end": 5759.08, "text": " when you're being attacked. This will all be pre-registered."}, {"start": 5759.08, "end": 5763.08, "text": " Now, this is quite important. We've bought in reinforcements."}, {"start": 5764.08, "end": 5773.08, "text": " Not only the armored vehicles that you see, the Dingo with its Bren gun opening up, we've got the Stuart M5 with its 37mm opening up."}, {"start": 5774.08, "end": 5779.08, "text": " Plus, if you can see, in and amongst that infantry, there is another Bren gun."}, {"start": 5779.08, "end": 5785.74, "text": " By this point in history the entire British infantry unit was built around"}, {"start": 5785.74, "end": 5791.86, "text": " getting that rapid-firing Bren gun into action. If that Bren gun ran out of"}, {"start": 5791.86, "end": 5796.66, "text": " ammunition and as an infantryman you had ammunition suddenly the Bren gun had"}, {"start": 5796.66, "end": 5804.12, "text": " more ammunition. The Germans have fallen back. The overwhelming Allied manor"}, {"start": 5804.12, "end": 5811.48, "text": " the material is taking its toll on these Germans. They're falling back, they're going back to"}, {"start": 5811.48, "end": 5817.0, "text": " their second defensive line. Unfortunately the Germans have been given a little bit of"}, {"start": 5817.0, "end": 5822.92, "text": " time to repair. They're now pretty dug in, they've got some nice cover there. This is"}, {"start": 5822.92, "end": 5828.8, "text": " going to be difficult for the Allies to be able to weed them out. Everybody's trying"}, {"start": 5828.8, "end": 5838.46, "text": " to keep their heads down. If you listen carefully over the rather large amount of gunfire we've"}, {"start": 5838.46, "end": 5843.34, "text": " got going on here, you will hear the infantry absolutely screaming at each other, different"}, {"start": 5843.34, "end": 5848.46, "text": " orders, different movements. Where they're going, this is not the time for subtlety."}, {"start": 5848.46, "end": 5856.820000000001, "text": " You're going to be firing your weapon, keeping that enemy head down while you try to advance"}, {"start": 5856.82, "end": 5862.9, "text": " through the battlefield. Usually here we say the tank moves in, in that wrecky"}, {"start": 5862.9, "end": 5866.62, "text": " vehicle like the Dingo, you don't want to be firing your main gun, something's gone"}, {"start": 5866.62, "end": 5871.82, "text": " horribly wrong. But if you're supporting infantry, pinning enemy infantry down,"}, {"start": 5871.82, "end": 5877.34, "text": " that is exactly where a little lightweight bulletproof vehicle with a"}, {"start": 5877.34, "end": 5881.099999999999, "text": " machine gun is going to come in vital."}, {"start": 5881.1, "end": 5889.3, "text": " It's all a bit cagey now, no one wants to necessarily make a move, the Germans know it's the Allies"}, {"start": 5889.3, "end": 5894.780000000001, "text": " move to make, but at the same time they're not just going to want to sit there and take"}, {"start": 5894.780000000001, "end": 5902.34, "text": " it, they're probably planning something else."}, {"start": 5902.34, "end": 5906.700000000001, "text": " That being said, we've got more Allied armour in the field now."}, {"start": 5906.700000000001, "end": 5909.660000000001, "text": " This isn't just the Racky Force anymore."}, {"start": 5909.66, "end": 5915.62, "text": " This is the tank battalion, tank regiment coming forward."}, {"start": 5915.62, "end": 5921.0199999999995, "text": " We've got two chaffees in our arena, which apart from, well Friday and Saturday, I don't"}, {"start": 5921.0199999999995, "end": 5922.82, "text": " think has ever happened before."}, {"start": 5922.82, "end": 5929.66, "text": " With Sherman Fury behind it, that is the most powerful gun on the 6176.62, "text": " It will provide you that mobility, that protection, that firepower to bring the fight to the enemy."}, {"start": 6176.62, "end": 6180.62, "text": " But when it comes to weeding the amount of foxholes in place positions,"}, {"start": 6180.62, "end": 6183.82, "text": " bits of building that they've managed to acquire."}, {"start": 6183.82, "end": 6187.62, "text": " You are going to need boots on the ground and infantry moving forwards."}, {"start": 6193.62, "end": 6197.62, "text": " For many men it was the case of going in their bayonets fixed."}, {"start": 6200.62, "end": 6203.62, "text": " You can see the Bren gun being used to great effect over there,"}, {"start": 6203.62, "end": 6208.62, "text": " really pinning down any attempt at the Germans at moving anywhere."}, {"start": 6208.62, "end": 6213.3, "text": " That doesn't mean they're going to give up, they're going to fight all of the way, hopefully"}, {"start": 6213.3, "end": 6217.3, "text": " try and bring out the pocket, break out the pocket."}, {"start": 6217.3, "end": 6222.86, "text": " They were pretty good at this, being encircled and keep fighting, any sliver of hope so the"}, {"start": 6222.86, Thompson really dense metal, twice the density of steel. Put that in the"}, {"start": 7537.66, "end": 7542.5, "text": " center of your round and it's got great penetration. At the same time other"}, {"start": 7542.5, "end": 7547.7, "text": " ideas are coming along for knocking out tanks. Hollow charge weapons. You've seen"}, {"start": 7547.7, "end": 7552.18, "text": " the Panzerfaust. We have the Pier in Britain and Britain comes up with"}, {"start": 7552.18, "end": 7559.26, "text": " another weird one called High Explosive Squash Head and over at Fort Halstead"}, {"start": 7559.26, "end": 7570.14, "text": " in Kent, they come up with a very thin casing, like a high explosive round, packed inside"}, {"start": 7570.14, "end": 7576.780000000001, "text": " with plastic explosive. And the idea of that type of round, if you fire it at a tank, it"}, {"start": 7576.780000000001, "end": 7582.18, "text": " doesn't have to have a lot of welly behind to penetrate the armour, it squashes on the"}, {"start": 7582.18, "end": 7588.06, "text": " side of the enemy's tank and a detonator at the back, just after it squashed on"}, {"start": 7588.06, "end": 7592.54, "text": " a millisecond later, detonates the plastic explosive."}, {"start": 7592.54, "end": 7595.700000000001, "text": " And it sends a shockwave through the tank's armour,"}, {"start": 7595.700000000001, "end": 7599.42, "text": " means a whopping great scab flies off on the inside."}, {"start": 7599.42, "end": 7603.26, "text": " And it's also good for knocking down pillboxes or buildings."}, {"start": 7603.26, "end": 7605.22, "text": " So we like it in Britain."}, {"start": 7605.22, "end": 7608.1, "text": " And we fire hesh rounds in our tanks"}, {"start": 7608.1, "end": 7609.34, "text": " right up to recently."}, {"start": 7609.34, "end": 7612.18, "text": " We'll see the issue there with the British Army"}, {"start": 7612.18, "end": 7613.900000000001, "text": " a bit later on."}, {"start": 7613.900000000001, "end": 7616.3, "text": " And that's the type of round"}, {"start": 7616.3, "end": 7620.8, "text": " They test in that whopping great big 183mm gun."}, {"start": 7621.8, "end": 7626.8, "text": " FB4005, it gets overtaken by events."}, {"start": 7626.8, "end": 7632.3, "text": " It's not that it's a bad idea, but all of a sudden another weapon system comes on"}, {"start": 7632.3, "end": 7635.8, "text": " that seems to do the same job better, the missile."}, {"start": 7635.8, "end": 7639.3, "text": " We don't need quite as big a gun, they were saying,"}, {"start": 7639.3, "end": 7641.8, "text": " and also it was starting to cost a lot of money."}, {"start": 7641.8, "end": 7645.8, "text": " The government cancels the project, so it never gets to see action,"}, {"start": 7645.8, "end": 7651.8, "text": " but still a bit of a wow factor rarity, the biggest one ever put on for direct fire on a tank."}, {"start": 7651.8, "end": 7678.08, "text": " Now, after the Second World War, the Americans said, we've had the nuclear bomb, they've"}, {"start": 7678.08, "end": 7681.76, "text": " now built up a really big strategic air force."}, {"start": 7681.76, "end": 7687.360000000001, "text": " takes its foot off the idea of developing tanks. There's a bit of work going on, not that"}, {"start": 7687.360000000001, "end": 7692.72, "text": " interested. We've got other things to fight wars with. And then all of a sudden what kicks"}, {"start": 7692.72, "end": 7699.4400000000005, "text": " off in 1950 is the Korean War. And for the first time, the Americans won, not even the"}, {"start": 7699.4400000000005, "end": 7704.72, "text": " first time, for another time, the Americans are suddenly found wanting. They need kit quickly."}, {"start": 7704.72, "end": 7710.8, "text": " They are literally getting World War II tanks, like the M26 Pershing tank. They're"}, {"start": 7710.8, "end": 7716.74, "text": " taking them off plinths to reactivate them to send them off to Korea. They've"}, {"start": 7716.74, "end": 7724.12, "text": " got a couple of tank projects on the go. One is using the hull of the M26 and put"}, {"start": 7724.12, "end": 7727.96, "text": " a new turret on the top. We've actually got the tank that comes out there on"}, {"start": 7727.96, "end": 7735.88, "text": " our mound at the moment, the M407. They put a 90mm gun in it."}, {"start": 7735.88, "end": 7740.88, "text": " So again, back to slightly bigger than the World War Two German gun."}, {"start": 7740.88, "end": 7745.88, "text": " They put it together in a hurry in the early 1950s to go to Korea."}, {"start": 7745.88, "end": 7749.88, "text": " Doesn't work very well. It is not a success."}, {"start": 7749.88, "end": 7755.88, "text": " So that as a tank was given away quickly by the Americans."}, {"start": 7755.88, "end": 7761.88, "text": " And if you're looking at it there on the mound, you might recognize it from loads of war movies in the 50s and 60s."}, {"start": 7761.88, "end": 7766.88, "text": " because basically 99% of the production was given away to other countries."}, {"start": 7766.88, "end": 7771.88, "text": " They moved straight on to another tank, the M48 instead."}, {"start": 7791.88, "end": 7804.0, "text": " Now, FV4005 as you see is it's moving around there."}, {"start": 7804.0, "end": 7809.36, "text": " Such a big gun, it needs a cradle on the front to stop the gun waving around, a couple of"}, {"start": 7809.36, "end": 7814.24, "text": " tonnes worth there, so you don't want that rocking on what's called the trunnions, holding"}, {"start": 7814.24, "end": 7815.84, "text": " it in the turret."}, {"start": 7815.84, "end": 7820.04, "text": " And it's even got an anchor on the back that they drop into the ground if it was"}, {"start": 7820.04, "end": 7821.04, "text": " going to fire."}, {"start": 7821.04, "end": 7827.16, "text": " bit of a danger if you fire at 90 degrees from the hull because there's so much recoil."}, {"start": 7827.16, "end": 7833.38, "text": " They test it with a loading assist equipment. It's basically not an auto loader but two-part"}, {"start": 7833.38, "end": 7838.84, "text": " ammunition in goes around, that's rammed in and then followed by a massive brass case"}, {"start": 7838.84, "end": 7845.36, "text": " full of the explosive to blast that 183mm round out."}, {"start": 7845.36, "end": 7850.06, "text": " The armoured box on the top wasn't really meant for a turret, it was just to house"}, {"start": 7850.06, "end": 7856.06, "text": " to see how big a space the crews would need to actually work on the inside."}, {"start": 7856.06, "end": 7861.06, "text": " But as that vehicle goes off, we've got the Centurion now driving round."}, {"start": 7861.06, "end": 7865.06, "text": " And I mentioned that as the tank that at the end of World War II, Britain developed,"}, {"start": 7865.06, "end": 7869.06, "text": " starts off with a 17-pounder gun on."}, {"start": 7869.06, "end": 7875.06, "text": " So that is a 77.2mm, the same gun that was on the Sherman Firefly."}, {"start": 7875.06, "end": 7881.56, "text": " very effective, very quickly, because they designed it with upgrades in mind,"}, {"start": 7881.56, "end": 7886.06, "text": " we had the next generation gun on called the 20-pounder."}, {"start": 7886.06, "end": 7892.56, "text": " And one of these weird things comes along as well, just like the Korean War that shakes everyone up."}, {"start": 7892.56, "end": 7899.56, "text": " And that was in 1956 in Budapest, Hungarian uprising is going on,"}, {"start": 7899.56, "end": 7908.56, "text": " and the Hungarians get hold of a Russian T-54A tank and drive it into the British Embassy Compound."}, {"start": 7908.56, "end": 7917.56, "text": " And it gives the defence attache a chance to measure the thickness of the frontal armour on what would be the enemy's tank,"}, {"start": 7917.56, "end": 7922.56, "text": " potentially if the Cold War became a hot war, and look at the size of the gun."}, {"start": 7922.56, "end": 7925.56, "text": " And it frightens NATO."}, {"start": 7925.56, "end": 7948.52, "text": " We are worried now that 20 pounder on our centurions is not going to be good enough."}, {"start": 7948.52, "end": 7956.120000000001, "text": " So again, over at Fort Halstead in Kent, they quickly come up with a new design gun."}, {"start": 7956.120000000001, "end": 7966.76, "text": " It's going to be called the L705mm gun and they end up using that, they fit it the same"}, {"start": 7966.76, "end": 7973.320000000001, "text": " size as the \u00a320, it goes straight on the Centurions just like this one and that 105mm"}, {"start": 7973.320000000001, "end": 7981.52, "text": " gun with new types of ammunition can penetrate that T-54 and it's so much"}, {"start": 7981.52, "end": 7985.960000000001, "text": " better it actually makes some other guns are already in service or even bigger"}, {"start": 7985.960000000001, "end": 7991.920000000001, "text": " it makes them redundant and it is a very effective bit of kit. We start putting"}, {"start": 7991.920000000001, "end": 7997.320000000001, "text": " them on our centurion tanks towards the end of the 1950s the Americans"}, {"start": 7997.320000000001, "end": 8002.68, "text": " copy us straight away and that's what makes some of these earlier American"}, {"start": 8002.68, "end": 8010.4400000000005, "text": " tanks like the M47, M48, we're going to see the M60 at a moment, those become redundant."}, {"start": 8010.4400000000005, "end": 8015.72, "text": " The M60, they're starting to build it in America, they're doing this progression of what they"}, {"start": 8015.72, "end": 8021.64, "text": " call pattern tanks. The M48 looks very much like the M47 driving around, but it's better,"}, {"start": 8021.64, "end": 8027.04, "text": " it's more reliable, it's bigger. And the M60 that we've seen that Sandy coloured"}, {"start": 8027.04, "end": 8030.76, "text": " one, same thing. It looks the same sort of tank but on steroids, they're just"}, {"start": 8030.76, "end": 8036.360000000001, "text": " getting them bigger each time. But this time the Americans, they do a gunnery trial, six"}, {"start": 8036.360000000001, "end": 8044.68, "text": " guns, what ones are best, the British L705mm gun. So that's the one they build under license"}, {"start": 8044.68, "end": 8060.6, "text": " and put on their M60 tanks."}, {"start": 8060.6, "end": 8066.6, "text": " One of the things the Americans experimented with, they're trialing 90mm gun on the M47."}, {"start": 8066.6, "end": 8070.6, "text": " If you look on the front of the turret, two little round balls it looks like."}, {"start": 8070.6, "end": 8075.6, "text": " That actually contains across the front of the turret, there's a range finder."}, {"start": 8075.6, "end": 8080.6, "text": " If you can work out the exact distance the enemy are away, instead of World War Two,"}, {"start": 8080.6, "end": 8084.6, "text": " one round over, one round under, if you're lucky the third round's on target,"}, {"start": 8084.6, "end": 8090.6, "text": " That helps judge the distance, so you've got more chance of a first round hit."}, {"start": 8090.6, "end": 8098.6, "text": " And ironically, when those M47s were given away to other armies and had the chance of being improved, they did very well."}, {"start": 8098.6, "end": 8107.6, "text": " The Italian army once won the Canada Cup, which was basically the sort of tank gunnery competition between all the Allied nations,"}, {"start": 8107.6, "end": 8112.6, "text": " who can hit the most targets accurately in the quickest time."}, {"start": 8112.6, "end": 8127.6, "text": " So those American building this series of tanks, you can see the M60 driving around now, there were always aspirations as there always is for new technology to go on a vehicle but it's never ready in time."}, {"start": 8127.6, "end": 8140.6, "text": " And the Americans had a new type of armor they wanted steel with silica glass in between as a sandwich that was going to be more effective against certain types of incoming rounds, not ready in time."}, {"start": 8140.6, "end": 8146.3, "text": " in time. So that's why you see this whopper now with great big bits of cast armour still"}, {"start": 8146.3, "end": 8163.8, "text": " on it. Great big cast turret, cast hull as well."}, {"start": 8163.8, "end": 8170.160000000001, "text": " Now for this generation they put in a huge great big diesel engine in the back and these"}, {"start": 8170.16, "end": 8177.0, "text": " These tanks as well, over 8,000 made, actually more than that on the M60s, sold or passed"}, {"start": 8177.0, "end": 8181.84, "text": " on all around the world, a lot of them still in service, they're still being used by the"}, {"start": 8181.84, "end": 8189.04, "text": " Egyptians, the Turkish army has many of them at the moment, used by the Americans in"}, {"start": 8189.04, "end": 8197.52, "text": " the First Gulf War, by the US Marines as well, and it was a reliable tank but not particularly"}, {"start": 8197.52, "end": 8204.52, "text": " exciting for many people. It had got a good gun, reasonable armour, a reasonable reliability"}, {"start": 8204.52, "end": 8210.800000000001, "text": " but it certainly wasn't at the cutting edge in any way. And in the end again the Americans"}, {"start": 8210.800000000001, "end": 8215.68, "text": " replaced this by the famous Abrams tanks and most of these were finally given away."}, {"start": 8215.68, "end": 8221.04, "text": " They somewhat went to the National Guard units. So the British gun in essence on"}, {"start": 8221.04, "end": 8226.04, "text": " that tank and on the side of the turret as well British smoke dischargers, those"}, {"start": 8226.04, "end": 8232.160000000002, "text": " funny little banks of tubes to fire out patterns of smoke grenade."}, {"start": 8232.160000000002, "end": 8238.04, "text": " Now this other one was made in nine till designed in 1950 as well as part of that response to"}, {"start": 8238.04, "end": 8243.04, "text": " the Korean War.
