You'd hold them back, you'd take the losses. A chap called General Bagnell comes in. However, its engine does let it down. You still really don't know what's in it today because it is that secret."}, {"start": 514.84, "end": 523.84, "text": " Chieftain is originally a big slab of metal. This is composite. This is why it takes the shape it does."}, {"start": 523.84, "end": 529.0400000000001, "text": " It's angular, it's slabsided, and it works fantastically."}, {"start": 530.64, "end": 535.64, "text": " Our Chieftain Mark X is upgraded with still group."}, {"start": 537.0400000000001, "end": 542.44, "text": " While that is technically a composite armour, it is metal backed with rubber."}, {"start": 543.44, "end": 545.64, "text": " Challenger is a whole different ball game."}, {"start": 546.64, "end": 550.24, "text": " Its gun is exactly the same as a Chieftain's."}, {"start": 550.24, "end": 557.04, "text": " its fire control system is near enough the same as a chieftain mark 11 but that mobility really"}, {"start": 557.04, "end": 563.92, "text": " gives this tank the edge all those reforms i spoke about in the mid 80s this is what allows the army"}, {"start": 563.92, "end": 570.5600000000001, "text": " the royal armor corps in particular to go out into desert storm what we call operation grand b in"}, {"start": 570.5600000000001, "end": 579.52, "text": " 1991 where a full armored division and perform exceptionally well in offensive maneuver warfare"}, {"start": 580.24, "end": 588.24, "text": " It was an army prepared to fight on the northwest, on the northern plains of Germany."}, {"start": 588.24, "end": 596.24, "text": " It ended up doing, well, basically the opposite of that in 1991, but it achieved it."}, {"start": 596.24, "end": 601.24, "text": " That officer corps, that leadership corps, those senior non-commissioned officers,"}, {"start": 601.24, "end": 604.24, "text": " they grew up in the army of the early 80s."}, {"start": 610.24, "end": 617.24, "text": " James was just mentioning the performance of Charlie Won in Op Granby in the first Gulf War."}, {"start": 617.24, "end": 624.24, "text": " Having spoken to General Sabatric accordingly about this, he was the guy who had a big hand"}, {"start": 624.24, "end": 632.24, "text": " in the origination of the vehicle."}, {"start": 632.24, "end": 639.24, "text": " But up to the point where Challenger departed for the Gulf, their maintenance record was abysmal,"}, {"start": 639.24, "end": 644.16, "text": " shorter spares, what happens is an awful lot of cannibalization to get the vehicles going,"}, {"start": 644.16, "end": 650.64, "text": " desertization and then finally following that they did perform extremely well. They moved"}, {"start": 650.64, "end": 657.44, "text": " for about 350 kilometers in four days and did a very good job. Now looking at the Warsaw"}, {"start": 657.44, "end": 666.04, "text": " Pact vehicles, here you have the BRDM2 which is an amphibious scout car, amphibious that's"}, {"start": 666.04, "end": 673.04, "text": " words that's going to occur repeatedly. BRDM-2, that's the AmpliA Scout Car. See how that"}, {"start": 673.04, "end": 677.48, "text": " and the vehicle behind it, the 1890, they're both boat shaped. They are both designed to"}, {"start": 677.48, "end": 684.0, "text": " cross bodies of water on the surface. The BRDM-2, it's a Scout Car, they're used as"}, {"start": 684.0, "end": 690.64, "text": " command variants, anti-tank guided missile variants. This one, quite a jazzy camouflage"}, {"start": 690.64, "end": 695.68, "text": " scheme there is actually a nuclear biological and chemical warfare survey"}, {"start": 695.68, "end": 701.24, "text": " vehicle. But the whole thing about Warsaw Pact reconnaissance is it was"}, {"start": 701.24, "end": 706.48, "text": " aggressive. They went and go forward, probe the enemy, look for weaknesses, and"}, {"start": 706.48, "end": 711.76, "text": " suss out the routes by which the main diversions could follow. Now behind the"}, {"start": 711.76, "end": 719.28, "text": " RDM-2 is an OT-90. Now those of you who know about tanks will be thinking well"}, {"start": 719.28, "end": 722.28, "text": " Well, that's not what that's called at all, that's a BMP."}, {"start": 722.28, "end": 730.28, "text": " It's actually a Czechoslovak version of the soviet-designed BMP armoured personnel carrier."}, {"start": 730.28, "end": 737.28, "text": " It's got a slightly different turret. It was actually altered in the 1990s,"}, {"start": 737.28, "end": 745.28, "text": " and originally it started off with a 75mm gromm low velocity gun in the turret."}, {"start": 745.28, "end": 754.1, "text": " been replaced with a 14.5mm machine gun, which is actually round for round a far more effective"}, {"start": 754.1, "end": 760.24, "text": " weapon. The whole thing about it is an infantry fighting vehicle, so it can take part in combat."}, {"start": 760.24, "end": 766.3199999999999, "text": " The main thing about it, in the back there are eight, what we call, dismounts, infantrymen."}, {"start": 766.3199999999999, "end": 771.16, "text": " As it goes past you'll see there are rifle ports in the side, never really quite understood"}, {"start": 771.16, "end": 777.36, "text": " what they're all about. The whole thing is that infantry and tanks work together."}, {"start": 777.36, "end": 785.7199999999999, "text": " Now, classic T-TAC, T-72, comes out as the one I've suggested in the early 1970s. But the T-72 is an absolute classic of its type. When you look at it, you think"}, {"start": 800.16, "end": 807.0, "text": " T-Tank. It's low to the ground. It has got that walk-shaped turret. They've"}, {"start": 807.0, "end": 810.9599999999999, "text": " deliberately made the thing lower and in order to do that they get rid of the"}, {"start": 810.9599999999999, "end": 814.88, "text": " only crew member who needs to stand up to do his job. That's the loader. So"}, {"start": 814.88, "end": 820.9599999999999, "text": " underneath that turret there is an auto loader of the rounds. It's"}, {"start": 820.9599999999999, "end": 825.8, "text": " also loaded by the breach and there's a carousel underneath. The gunner presses"}, {"start": 825.8000000000001, "end": 830.84, "text": " button and it puts the right round of the bleach. It's actually very efficient indeed."}, {"start": 832.36, "end": 837.72, "text": " The gun is 125mm, very powerful, but the whole tank itself is"}, {"start": 842.1200000000001, "end": 850.2800000000001, "text": " lighter and faster than something like chieftain. But what I didn't want to do with this video was just list a bunch of weird"}, {"start": 1474.0800000000002, "end": 1479.64, "text": " tanks we have in the collection. Instead, I conducted a highly scientific study. I sent"}, {"start": 1479.64, "end": 1484.0600000000002, "text": " a questionnaire out to all staff members of the Tank Museum asking what their weirdest"}, {"start": 1484.0600000000002, "end": 1490.66, "text": " tank is and why. The main results of this show that the Tank Museum staff know far too much"}, {"start": 1490.66, "end": 1497.5400000000002, "text": " about tanks to come to any sort of consensus, but it did show that a few patterns were emerging."}, {"start": 1497.5400000000002, "end": 1502.9, "text": " Turretless tanks, not tank destroyers, actual turretless tanks. These immediately raised"}, {"start": 1502.9, "end": 1509.14, "text": " Eyebrows. Multi-turreted tanks. A whole category of what were they thinking?"}, {"start": 1509.14, "end": 1515.9, "text": " Normal tanks with weird bits stuck on. These aren't necessarily weird tanks, but they've had weirdness added to them."}, {"start": 1515.9, "end": 1523.7, "text": " Experimental designs. This is where true weirdness thrives. When designers are allowed to go wild, they really do."}, {"start": 1523.7, "end": 1531.94, "text": " And the French. A category of their own. French tanks are often weird not because they need to be, but because they simply are."}, {"start": 1531.94, "end": 1536.18, "text": " Take the AMX 13 for example, it may look like just a light tank,"}, {"start": 1536.18, "end": 1538.8200000000002, "text": " but it was one of the main tanks of the French army."}, {"start": 1538.8200000000002, "end": 1544.02, "text": " They could have built it like a normal light tank, but no, they decided to put the engine at the front"}, {"start": 1544.02, "end": 1549.14, "text": " and the ortho-loading oscillating turret at the rear, but because they could."}, {"start": 1549.78, "end": 1554.1000000000001, "text": " But if we had to pick one tank that would truly answer the question,"}, {"start": 1554.1000000000001, "end": 1558.98, "text": " what makes a tank weird, it would have to be the MBT-70."}, {"start": 1558.98, "end": 1564.98, "text": " Now, I would like to make an honourable mention to this, the EBR. Yes, I know it's not a tank,"}, {"start": 1564.98, "end": 1570.26, "text": " but it is really weird. Look, so we've got oscillating, also loading turret in the middle."}, {"start": 1570.26, "end": 1574.5, "text": " You've got two road wheels in the centre that drop down that are only made of steel for a bit"}, {"start": 1574.5, "end": 1579.38, "text": " of extra traction. You've got a driver at the front and at the back, and they're really small"}, {"start": 1579.38, "end": 1584.66, "text": " compartments anyway, and the most confusing hatch system my colleagues have ever come across."}, {"start": 1584.66, "end": 1591.8200000000002, "text": " The MBT-70 has all the hallmarks of weirdness and then some. The gun, 152"}, {"start": 1591.8200000000002, "end": 1596.8400000000001, "text": " millimeters and not really a gun, it's a gun launcher, primarily for firing the"}, {"start": 1596.8400000000001, "end": 1602.5800000000002, "text": " Shaleili ATGW but by this point the US Army had already worked out it was just"}, {"start": 1602.5800000000002, "end": 1608.18, "text": " kind of bad. The turret, it may look normal but it has a sub turret and it's"}, {"start": 1608.18, "end": 1612.26, "text": " not even for the commander like the Conqueror, it's for the driver. The idea"}, {"start": 1612.26, "end": 1617.54, "text": " was to make the hull as small as possible, but that didn't really work because the engine"}, {"start": 1617.54, "end": 1623.86, "text": " still had to go somewhere. The suspension is actively controlled, so while in theory a good idea,"}, {"start": 1623.86, "end": 1629.62, "text": " it was very complicated and does just make the thing look really goofy. Plus the whole project"}, {"start": 1629.62, "end": 1635.78, "text": " was a US-German collaboration for a new generation of main battle tanks, but by this point everyone"}, {"start": 1635.78, "end": 1640.5, "text": " had kind of worked out that conventional tanks worked best, and this wasn't a single oddity"}, {"start": 1640.5, "end": 1646.18, "text": " of an experiment. They ended up building 22 prototypes and the whole project cost both"}, {"start": 1646.18, "end": 1654.82, "text": " nations just $3.5 billion in today's money. In the end, I do think it just comes down to vibes"}, {"start": 1654.82, "end": 1665.7, "text": " and some tanks just have weird vibes. Well, weird vibes. Before it's moved we're going to have a trooper tanks if we were an armoured"}, {"start": 4865.92, "end": 4869.92, "text": " battle group watching this spot, looking out in depth to make sure there's no"}, {"start": 4869.92, "end": 4873.96, "text": " enemy over there. Move into the crossing, it's going to be protected. It could be"}, {"start": 4873.96, "end": 4878.24, "text": " four warriors, it could be two tanks, it depends what we've got on hand. We would rather lose another armoured asset than"}, {"start": 4883.16, "end": 4888.4, "text": " lose one of these because we don't have that many of them. And again we always"}, {"start": 4888.4, "end": 4893.52, "text": " and again part of the history, the museum still teaches that idea of what"}, {"start": 4893.52, "end": 4898.04, "text": " can we learn from the past.
