people have used for different things.

specious group.
So there's a lot of different species worldwide.
And that we think has to do with the fact that they feed on plants.
So as plants diversified, there was this radiation where beetles would diversify.
As there's more plants to feed on, they can specialize on different plants.
So it's this arms race of plants evolving, beetles evolving, and kind of going back and forth with one another.
But that's how we think that there's this really high insect diversity, especially among beetles,
is they kind of co-occurred and started diversifying at the same time as plants did.

hits its northern range up in Florida,

and where they do, it's along that southern border.
So Florida, Arizona, Texas are like

once you start learning groups like, you know,
figure out what makes a ladybug a ladybug, you can identify a ladybug anywhere in the
world, at least to being that family.
So once you have a broader understanding, you can see patterns and like, I don't know what
species a lot of these things are, but I can at least have a solid guess on family for
most of them, because it's stuff similar to what I've seen before.

is an invasive species or something in an area, they did this with screw warm,

They mass breed like millions and millions and millions and millions of these bugs
irradiate them so they can't reproduce anymore, and then drop them out of a plane
so they mate with all of the flies that are out in the environment.
Because screwworm females will only mate once.
So if she breeds with a non-fertil male, that's the end of her breeding cycle
and that's how you can kind of like get rid of those species if you don't want them there.
So we do use radiation in some ways to mutate insects but not to the like super powers whatever level

It's a relative of the leaf beetle that we were looking at over there a little bit

larvae of that beetle. They look like a bird's nest almost, but all of that
material that they're using to camouflage and protect themselves is
actually old poop. That is what they call their fecal shield. As they
defecate from eating plants they'll just continually grow out these shields
and kind of make this bigger and bigger and bigger nest and then when they're ready to
pupate so going from the larvae to the adult stage they go through that middle section just
like butterflies do, they'll hang on to the branch, go through the process and then
come out and then look like that. So they go from this little bird's nest thing to that
metallic blue beetle that we have up there.
